Luxury fashion brand Missoni involved in new 68-storey Toronto skyscraper
Luxury Italian fashion house Missoni is coming to Toronto, partnering with an established local developer on a new 68-storey condo and hotel skyscraper set to rise from the site of a demolished hotel on Jarvis Street.
Missoni and local firm Amexon Development Corporation announced the new Missoni Sky project on Tuesday, revealing details of the new "fashion-inspired" development coming to 225 Jarvis Street, just south of Dundas.
The tower is planned for the site of the former Grand Hotel, which was demolished in 2020-2021 to make way for future redevelopment.
In place of the former hotel, the new property is set to include a boutique hotel component of just 177 suites sharing the tower base with upscale retail and restaurant space, with almost 800 condominium units in the tower above.
And Missoni Sky will be more than just the renowned brand slapped onto a condo tower, with the development incorporating zigzag patterns and harmonious colour combos referencing the luxury designer's signature geometric aesthetic.
"Missoni Sky represents the successful translation of our brand's style into an immersive living experience," said Alberto Caliri, Creative Director of Missoni Home. Calini promises that "every corner of the tower" will be infused with the design house's "distinctive approach."
According to Missoni and Amexon, this will include an "unmistakable Missoni ambiance" throughout the development, evidenced in the architecture and interior design of the spaces from local firms Core Architects and II BY IV DESIGN.
Dan Menchions, Principal at II BY IV DESIGN, says that "working with Missoni has been an incredible journey, allowing us to craft living spaces that feel like stepping into a piece of art."
As for the outside, Core Architects' Deni Poletti says that the building's exterior — consisting of an eight-storey brick podium topped by a glass and steel tower — "pushes creative boundaries."
However, despite these hyped-up descriptions, the tower's design language is comparable to several other existing condo developments in the city, and doesn't quite compete with the upper echelon of flagship projects like The One and the SkyTower under construction elsewhere in town.
Amexon and Missoni's bold height aspirations for the site have not yet been approved. The site was recently rezoned for a tower with a 49-storey height, though the project team is preparing to file new plans that reflect the additional proposed height.
